What are surrender fees?

Withdrawing money from an annuity may incur a surrender fee, which is highest in the first year and decreases annually, typically reaching zero by the eighth year. Immediate annuities usually don’t have surrender fees. Some contracts allow penalty-free withdrawals of up to 10% annually. These fees help insurers recover setup costs and discourage short-term use of deferred annuities. Always check for fees before investing.
