When It Comes To Life Insurance, There’s Good News And Bad News

Individual life insurance premiums in the U.S. reached a record $17.5 billion in 2025, a 10% increase from 2024. Indexed universal life (IUL) policies led growth with $4.5 billion in new premiums, up 17%, while whole life insurance premiums rose 7% to $6.4 billion. Variable universal life premiums grew 17% to $2.6 billion. Term life premiums increased 3% to $3.1 billion, and fixed universal life premiums declined 4%. Sales growth is expected to slow in 2026 due to weakening economic conditions.
